From birth to 2 weeks, crying is mainly associated with immediate needs or discomfort, including hunger, feeding or latch difficulties, wet diapers, and sensitivity to temperature. From 2 weeks to 4 months, when intense crying commonly peaks, the card identifies infantile colic as the leading cause, describing it as sharp, repeating gut cramps associated with an immature digestive system processing milk or trapped gas. Other possible causes in this age range include swallowed air or incomplete burping, reflux or silent reflux after feeding, and overstimulation. From 4 to 12 months, crying may be related to developmental and physical changes such as teething pain, separation anxiety, reactions to newly introduced solid foods, and overtiredness from missed naps.
